Camille Stewart Gloster shares how strategic vision, a holistic mindset, and a passion for solving complex challenges fuel her leadership in cybersecurity...

I got into cyber through…a fortuitous series of events. I knew I wanted to blend my technical acumen and passion for the law and people to solve hard problems. I didn’t know how that would manifest itself but I was recruited to a cybersecurity company after law school and it crystallized quickly that I could bring all of my skills and interests to bear on complex, existential challenges that would benefit society without compromise.

For me, a positive cyber mindset is…being realistic about the threat landscape, creative in our responses, and optimistic about the transformative potential of technology. It requires adopting the attacker’s mindset to anticipate risks, while also envisioning the secure, inclusive tech ecosystem we want to build. It means thinking holistically—integrating people, policy, process, and technology—and staying eager to learn in a field that never stands still.

The skill that helps me excel in my cybersecurity career is…my ability to see both the forest and the trees—holding a strategic vision while navigating the details that bring it to life. This skill allows me to break down complex challenges, build high-performing multidisciplinary teams, and architect solutions grounded in the realities of the sociotechnical systems we operate in. Coupled with technical acumen, a strong grasp of geopolitical risk, the rule of law, and systems thinking, it’s a combination that enables me to design resilient strategies and execute them with precision and purpose.

I would tell my younger self to…learn to live and thrive in discomfort and uncertainty, it’s the most valuable skill you’ll ever develop. It will teach you to spot opportunity in what feels like a setback, unlock your creativity, and help you turn constraint into ingenuity. Discomfort is often the signal that something transformative is on the horizon. Embrace it.

My top tip to those interested in transitioning to a career in cybersecurity is…to read my substack, Command Line with Camille. I share insights on breaking into and thriving in cybersecurity and tech, how security is evolving in the age of AI, and how to stay sharp in a field (and a society) shaped by shifting power dynamics, geopolitical risk, and constant policy change. There’s no single path, and the space evolves every day. Start with my first post, “Breaking In, Leveling Up: Navigating a Career in Cybersecurity in the Age of AI,” and join the community.

The quote I live by is…“If I didn’t define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive.” ― Audre Lorde

In a world where people see glimpses of your reality and people are quick to put you in a box or have expectations of you, this is a reminder that my purpose and my next steps must be guided by me, not the whims of the world.

My recommended read isLikable Badass by Alison Fragale, PhD. I often recommend this book to women in cyber because it offers a powerful blueprint for owning your voice, navigating male-dominated spaces, and leading with both confidence and authenticity. Cybersecurity demands both technical grit and interpersonal agility, this book helps women strengthen both, without compromising who they are. It’s part mindset shift, part tactical guide, and all about showing up with impact.

I most want to be remembered for…relentlessly working to bend the arc of technological innovation toward shared prosperity and opportunity. I want to be known for advancing a tech future that is not only secure, private, and rooted in human dignity, but also one that uses cool, powerful technology to improve lives, equalize opportunity, and help society evolve in more just and inclusive ways.
