Ben Evanko shares how curiosity, collaboration, and a human-centered mindset launched his unexpected path into cybersecurity...

I got into cyber through…a company-wide cyber compliance initiative that needed fast results. At the time, I didn’t know much about cybersecurity, but I’ve always had a fascination with technology and a passion for learning.

What impacted me most was connecting with experienced cybersecurity professionals who took the time to explain what they did and why it mattered. That collaboration transformed my perspective. I no longer saw cybersecurity as a faceless threat or a compliance hurdle—I saw it as a vital part of protecting the convenience and capability technology brings to our lives. That experience sparked a journey I’ve been pursuing ever since, taking on new roles and responsibilities to deepen my understanding and broaden my influence in cybersecurity.

For me, a positive cyber mindset is…seeing cybersecurity not as a barrier, but as an enabler. I believe it’s about safeguarding what matters most—our privacy, our safety, and our ability to use technology freely and securely. Cybersecurity should support and enhance our experience, not complicate it. When done right, it quietly protects the things we value and keeps the digital world open for innovation.

The characteristics that helped me transition to a career in cyber are…curiosity and a passion for continuous learning. I didn’t plan to go into cybersecurity, but once I was exposed to it, I realized it touched everything I already loved about technology. My interdisciplinary background helped me provide fresh perspectives to the work. That blend of curiosity and diverse experience has led to creative solutions and a deep respect for the importance of cybersecurity.

The quote I live by is…”Love everyone.” It’s simple, but powerful. When people know they’re sincerely cared for, everything changes. Teams become stronger, challenges become surmountable, and workplaces become communities. I’ve seen love motivate individuals to grow, persevere, and succeed—myself included. It’s the foundation of my leadership and my work.

My favorite place is…in nature. It’s where I feel most connected—recharged, balanced, and inspired. Even as someone who loves tech, being outdoors reminds me of our deeper roots and the importance of harmony between progress and presence. Sometimes I unplug completely; other times, I use tech to enhance the experience. But nature is where I reset and reflect.

My inspiration is…the rising generation. Mentoring young people is one of the most rewarding parts of my life. When I see that spark of potential light up in someone, and then watch them grow into their capabilities, I am hopeful for the future. It’s a privilege to lift others up, to help them reach new heights—often beyond what we imagined for ourselves.
