See It To Be It Spotlight

As a veteran, ๐ ๐ด๐ผ๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ผ ๐ฐ๐๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ด๐ต…as a Marine, I learned early that people often assume wars are won through kinetic action alone. That is certainly one variable, but over time I came to appreciate something equally important: the OODA loop. The ability to observe, orient, decide, and act faster than your adversary depends on information you can trust.
The right information, in the right hands, at the right time can save lives. Sharing information, and knowing it can be trusted, is often what allows a mission to move forward with confidence. That lesson became clearer to me the longer I served.
When I transitioned into the technology industry, I realized cybersecurity is really the modern extension of that responsibility. Today, much of that same fight exists in the digital battlespace. The battlefield may look different, but the principle hasnโt changed: protect the information, protect the mission, and make sure the people who rely on it can trust it.
That mindset is what ultimately drew me into cybersecurity.
๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐บ๐ฒ, ๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ถ๐…remembering that security exists to serve the mission. Itโs easy to think of cybersecurity as something that slows things down or adds friction. In reality, the goal is the opposite. When information is protected properly, people can collaborate with confidence, share data more freely, and move faster. When security is done well, it doesnโt slow the mission down. It enables trust. And when trust exists, collaboration and innovation move much faster.

In the military, every decision involves balancing mission impact, timing, and potential consequences. That way of thinking translates directly into cybersecurity. Security decisions are rarely just technical decisions. They affect national security, business outcomes, and the trust people place in our systems. Having that operational mindset helped me bridge the gap between the technical teams building solutions and the leaders responsible for mission success.
๐ ๐๐ผ๐๐น๐ฑ ๐๐ฒ๐น๐น ๐บ๐ ๐๐ผ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ณ…that the path will not be linear, and that is completely okay. Some of the most meaningful opportunities in my career came from saying yes to things that were not part of the original plan. Staying curious and being willing to serve where youโre needed often opens doors you never expected.
๐ ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ฝ ๐๐ถ๐ฝ ๐๐ผ ๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ผ ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐ต ๐ถ๐…start by understanding the mission you want to support. Cybersecurity needs people who can connect technology to real-world outcomes. Whether that mission is national defense, protecting critical infrastructure, or safeguarding customers and businesses, the best cyber professionals understand why the technology matters. If you keep the mission in focus, the technical skills will follow.
๐ ๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฝ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ถ๐…the people who quietly carry the responsibility of protecting others. Service members, intelligence professionals, engineers, and analysts who work behind the scenes to keep systems secure rarely seek recognition, but the work they do matters enormously. Cybersecurity is ultimately about stewardship. We are trusted with protecting information that others depend on, and that responsibility is something I never take lightly.
