“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” - Epictetus
I got into cyber…through sheer determination. I was in a less than fulfilling role and keenly aware of the dead end. I began researching job demands and those with the highest projected growth and finding that many were in the IT space.
However, this presented a huge challenge because I was not tech savvy even though I very much wanted to be. But, armed with a dusty Forensic Computer Investigation Certificate I earned while receiving my MS in Forensic Science, and, after evaluating my skill set, this seemed as good a time as any to make a career change.
What I lacked in experience, I made up for with a broad skill set, curiosity, and ambition to be in the field. When I did land an opportunity, it was extremely exciting to say “yes” and take that big step forward.
For me, a positive cyber mindset is…one of curiosity and teachability. You have to be curious enough to want to learn, and teachable enough to learn it. This field requires continuous learning of cyber issues for companies and individuals alike, in addition to ever-changing technology and threat landscapes. Being curious and teachable in your role of protecting information systems and people allows you to be proactive and flexible to the challenges that arise daily.
What is your favorite part about UWIC? The energy of the room instantly excited and humbled me to be doing what I do.
My top tip to those interested in transitioning to a career in cybersecurity is…to start where you are. Think about the kind of job in cyber you might want or be a good fit for and do your research. Evaluate the skills you have and their applicability. Do not underestimate any skill or sell yourself short. There are many aspects to the field of cyber that a person can fit into whether experienced or not. Once you’ve taken inventory of what it is you offer, lean in, and go after it. No doubt, you will get there.
The quote I live by is…“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” – Epictetus. If we want change for ourselves, we have to do that through our own efforts.
Something few people know about me is… that I was the first female diener for MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, OH. Maybe the only? Don’t know!
