I got into cyber…earlier in my career; I worked for the U.S. Navy’s STANDARD Missile Program Office as the Project Manager for Japan and Korea. In this job, I was responsible for executing physical and cyber security requirements for foreign facilities established in the Department of Defense’s National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual. Interestingly, the cyber requirements proved the most challenging, which sparked my curiosity to learn more.

The skill that set me up for success is…I have found that being results-focused will always separate you from the pack. Maintaining a positive attitude, making quick decisions, and valuing every task sets you apart. More to the point, this mindset is a recipe for success at every level; it’s something you don’t grow out of.

My top tip to those interested in transitioning to a career in cybersecurity is…every person has a skill and talent that the industry can leverage. You must showcase your transferable skills while considering augmenting them with a foundational cybersecurity certification like CompTIA’s Security+.

I would tell my younger self…don’t get discouraged as “every kick is a boost.” Remember to hold yourself accountable, stay curious, and be coachable!
